The government's revenue has declined compared to the same period last year, but the budget remains in surplus by MVR 1.4 billion, according to statistics by the Finance Ministry.
According to the Finance Ministry's Weekly Fiscal Development Report, the government received MVR 4.43 billion in revenue as of the 13th of this month, compared to MVR 4.79 billion in the same period last year. Meanwhile, total government expenditure this year, including loan repayments, lending and investments decreased to MVR 3.8 billion from MVR 4.9 billion in the same period last year.
Excluding loan repayment, lending and investments, the government's recurrent expenditure and capital expenditure stood at MVR 3 billion thus far this year. In 2024, the expenditure stood at MVR 4.1 billion.
According to the Finance Ministry, administrative and operating expenditure has reduced. While administrative and operating expenses stood at MVR 2.1 billion in the same period last year, this year, it is at MVR 1.7 billion.
In addition, capital expenditure has also declined. Capital expenditure stood at MVR 855 million during the same period last year as against MVR 169 million this year.
Although capital expenditure, administrative and operating expenses declined, salary expenditure increased this year. The state has spent MVR 1.14 billion on salaries and allowances as of the 13th of this month as against MVR 1.02 billion in the same period last year.
