Democrats seek intervention in SC case on Nasheed no-confidence motion

The Democrats have decided to seek an intervention into the case on the no confidence motion against Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed submitted to the Supreme Court by the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
Speaking at a press conference held Tuesday, Democrats Parliamentary Group leader Ali Azim stated that the party is seeking the intervention to the constitutional case on the grounds that they consider the case to be against the Parliament as an institution.
MDP submitted the case to the Supreme Court after Sunday's sitting of the parliament, for which the motion was scheduled, was cancelled due to Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla's absence citing sick leave.
"We don't believe that something can be done in an alternate way when the proper way to do it is clearly stated in laws and regulations. So it is not us who have brought the parliament to a halt. We will seek an intervention into the case submitted to the Supreme Court in order to reach a resolution," Azim said.

Azim alleged that MDP had submitted the no confidence motion against Nasheed in an attempt to obstruct the oath taking ceremony of President Elect Dr Mohamed Muizzu.
In the press conference, Azim also accused Finance Minister Ibrahim Ameer of acting in contravention of the Constitution by failing to attend the parliament sitting to present the state budget.
However, the Minister had made the decision on the advice of Attorney General Ibrahim Riffath which said that any work of the parliament could not go ahead prior to conducting sittings on the no-confidence motion submitted against the Speaker.
