Dredging work has commenced for the development of an airport in Bilehfahi, Shaviyani Atoll.
The project is being carried out by Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), which was awarded the contract to develop and operate the airport in October last year. The agreement was signed during President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s visit to islands in Shaviyani Atoll.
Speaking to PSM News, President of the Bilehfahi Council Abdulla Ziyad said the project is expected to bring significant development not only to Bilehfahi but to the wider region. He said the airport would contribute to economic growth and improve transport connectivity for the island and neighbouring areas.
Under the project, approximately 36 hectares of land will be dredged. Dredging is expected to be completed within eight months.
The planned airport will include a 1,500-metre runway along with other supporting aviation infrastructure.
President Muizzu has previously stated that the airport is expected to be completed and become operational within 30 months.
The project forms part of the government’s broader efforts to expand air connectivity across the Maldives, which includes plans to develop 15 new airports alongside existing facilities.
