Second RO plant in Hulhumale’ with 5,000-tonne per day capacity commissioned

The second RO plant in Hulhumale’, with a production capacity of 5,000-tonne per day, has been commissioned.
Malé Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC), the state-owned company responsible for water services in the Malé area, stated that the new facility will substantially boost its ability to supply water to both Malé and Hulhumalé.
According to the company, the plant will play a vital role in meeting the anticipated rise in water demand during the upcoming month of Ramadan, which is scheduled to begin next Wednesday.

This marks the second 5,000-tonne water production plant established by MWSC in Hulhumalé. It follows the inauguration of a 10,000-tonne water storage tank on August 17 last year—the largest facility of its kind in the Maldives. The facility was developed at a cost of MVR 34.7 million.
Speaking on PSM’s 'Raajje Miadhu' program, MWSC's Managing Director Abdul Matheen Mohamed highlighted that ensuring water security remains the company’s top priority. He revealed that MVR 300 million has been allocated toward these initiatives and noted that work is currently underway to construct two additional 13,000-tonne water plants to further strengthen the country’s water production and storage capacity.

The most severe water crisis in Malé’s recent history occurred in 2014, when a fire at an MWSC production facility left the capital without running water for more than a week. During that time, several neighboring countries extended significant assistance by supplying thousands of tonnes of water to the Maldives.
