President designates Un’gulu as part of Un’goofaaru; Kandaalifinolhu as part of Vashafaru

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has designated Un’gulu as part of Un’goofaaru in Raa Atoll. In a similar initiative, the President has also designated Kandaalifinolhu as part of Vashafaru, in Haa Alif Atoll.
The amendments were made pursuant to the authority accorded to the President under Section 134(a) of the Decentralisation Act.
The decision made on Un’gulu fulfills a Presidential pledge made to the local community. The residents of Un’goofaaru has requested the president to designate an uninhabited island for them to advance economic activities. On a community outreach trip by the President on 3 March, the President made the pledge to designate Un’gulu as part of of Un’goofaaru, after thoroughly checking whether the uninhabited island has any legal cases pending or ongoing in the relevant courts.
With this change formalised through a Presidential Decree, the list of inhabited islands in the Maldives, as specified in the schedule of Presidential Decree No. 2/2025, has been updated and republished in the Government Gazette.
