Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim has said three regulations are being formulated to strengthen the enforcement of the Waste Management Act.
According to the minister, regulations on general waste management, waste management service provision and disposable waste are being developed and are expected to come into force within two months.
The minister said drafting is nearly complete, with stakeholder consultations and legal work finalised. He added that an Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) rule is also being developed, which will make producers responsible for waste produced even after consumption of the product.
Noting that stricter enforcement is planned against those who dump waste irresponsibly, the minister said action will be taken and fines imposed. He stressed that the focus is on accountability, rather than punishment, aiming to not only penalise offenders but also hold them responsible. He added that the matter is linked to general cleanliness and the economy.
The minister emphasised public responsibility, stating that everyone must take responsibility for the waste they generate. The government has been conducting public awareness campaigns on waste management.
