State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) states there will be power outage in some areas of Male’ and Hulhumale’ on Saturday morning to undertake essential maintenance work.
According to STELCO, the power outage will be from 06:00am to 10:00am as they will temporarily shut down the 50MW engine in Hulhumale’.
The utility company said that areas in Malé and Hulhumalé will experience power outages lasting approximately one hour each during this period.
The exact times and the areas affected will be informed to customs via SMS.
STELCO said the engine was being shut down for essential maintenance work required to strengthen Male’ area’s electricity infrastructure and ensure the supply of electricity without interruption.
The utility company assured that buildings where essential services are rendered such as hospitals will not be affected by the power interruption.
STELCO stated that the maintenance work is a precautionary measure aimed at avoiding future disruptions and enhancing the reliability of electricity services.
Notably, there have been two total blackouts in Male’ and Hulhumale’ over the past two months.
The most recent power outage in the capital occurred on August 9, leaving residents of Malé and Hulhumalé without electricity for almost three hours—just two months after a previous total blackout on June 1, which lasted nearly six hours.
While majority of the Maldivian population resides in capital Male’ City, there have been concerns over damage to electrical appliances due to frequent power outages.
