Public Service Media (PSM)’s Chairperson, Aminath Namza has stated that the media plays a vital role in building a compassionate society. Namza made the remarks while speaking at a plenary session of the 20th Asia Media Summit, the largest regional media gathering currently ongoing in Siem Reap, Cambodia.
The summit includes plenary sessions on broadcasting and media, featuring the participation of experts from across the region. Namza took part as a panelist in the second session titled "Inspiring Voices from Across the World".
In her remarks, Namza said there are many voices around the world that remain unheard. The stories of those who are living in vulnerable situations, enduring endless suffering, or experienced life-changing events must be shared through the media, she said. Such stories can inspire kindness, compassion, and a spirit of helpfulness within the society, she added. These stories can also teach valuable lessons to others and inspire gratitude for their blessings, she said.
Namza emphasised that the media should embrace new technological tools such as artificial intelligence and other innovative new technology. However, it must be ensured that human experiences and emotions are not lost in the process, she said. Such stories are an important resource that connects people across borders, languages and cultures, she noted, adding that media professionals must use this resource responsibly.
Noting that President Dr Mohamed Muizzu places great importance on building a compassionate society, Namza said his policies accurately reflects the principle. She added that PSM is actively working hard to ensure that the programmes produced by PSM encourage the building of a compassionate society.
Chairperson Namza’s speech was warmly received by the delegates attending the session.
