President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated conducting the presidential, parliamentary and local council elections together would help to boost the development of the country.
Speaking at a campaign event held by the main ruling party Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) in Nolhivaram, Haa Dhaalu Atoll, President Solih said there are several difficulties in conducting three major elections in three consecutive years. He said conducting the major elections separately hinders the development projects of the administration, adding that conducting all three elections together will boost the speed of development projects.
President Solih noted the administration is dedicated to bring the development it had pledged for the nation. Assuring the administration will always listen to the concerns of the public, the president said councillors elected by the public must possess the capability of advocating for their constituents.
The campaign event in Nolhivaram was part of MDP’s mass campaign event in the atolls of Haa Alifu and Haa Dhaalu. The party is set to hold a conference in Kulhudhuffushi, Haa Dhaalu Atoll, named “Iruvai Conference” which is aimed at raising the awareness of councillors on the amendments brought to the Decentralisation Act. President Solih and members of the cabinet are scheduled to take part in the conference.
MDP said the campaign event in the northern atolls will be concluded on January 16.
