Ex-AG Suood backs MP Solih for opposition candidate ‘if Nasheed is unable to contest’

Maldives’ former attorney general Husnu Al Suood has also said that he supports MP Ibrahim Mohamed Solih contesting as the opposition’s presidential candidate.
Suood, one of Maldives’ most prominent lawyers, said so in a post on his Twitter account hours after opposition aligned lawmaker Ahmed Mahloof declared his support for the idea.
Suood said in his tweet, ‘if Mohamed Nasheed cannot contest in the 2018 Maldives Presidential Elections, then I too support Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’.
MP Mahloof said on Sunday that former president Nasheed is the ideal candidate but thinks his parliamentary peer MP Solih to be the ‘best choice’ if he cannot contest.
Nasheed won the Maldivian Democratic Party’s primary elections with over 43,000 votes. While the Jumhooree Party has also tapped its leader Qasim Ibrahim to be candidate, the allied opposition parties have said they will put forth a single candidate for the upcoming elections.
Both Nasheed and Qasim have expressed commitment to establishing a unity government.
MP Solih is a long serving politician who has a close relationship with Nasheed.
