Former President Mohamed Nasheed has appealed to President Abdullah Yameen to reduce his 13 year jail term.
The appeal was made in a letter sent to President Yameen by Nasheed’s legal team.
Former Youth Minister and Nasheed’s lawyer Hassan Latheef had signed the letter and published it on social media.
The law states that the President cannot reduce the jail term if convicted on terror charges. However, Nasheed’s lawyers state that the President can make an exemption to the rule under special considerations. They added that clause 29 subsection (c) of the Clemency Act grants the President power to do so, from a humanitarian point of view taking into consideration the prisoner’s medical condition and present status.
The letter added the trial carried out against Nasheed was carried out against the norms of the country’s judicial procedures and international conventions.
President Abdullah Yameen had previously called on Nasheed to follow the judicial processes and file the Criminal Court sentence for appeal in High Court.
Criminal Court issued the 13 year jail term for Nasheed on March 13th.
