3R Awards will start next year، says Vice President

Resorts responsible of disposing wastage in environment friendly fashion will be subjected to the 3R Awards، which will commence next year says Vice President Ahmed Adeeb.
While speaking at the opening ceremony of the 3R Forum، held at Dharubaaruge today، Vice President had stressed that the Maldivian economy depends heavily on tourism industry، and the industry depends on the environment itself.
“The awards received to various local resorts are evident signs that Maldivian resorts adopt safe and environment friendly techniques in disposing off the wastage” Adeeb said.
According to Vice President Adeeb، the Maldivian GDP’s 75% is tourism industry، and based on the 1999’s Act، all resorts prior to its establishment، a study must be carried to determine the effects enacting such a resort will have on the environment.
Under the reformed act on 2006، newly establishing resorts as well as established resorts must take high consideration on Maldivian biodiversity as well as to opt safe methods in disposing waste materials.
In addition to this، Mr. Adeeb had also highlighted that the local resorts take a high priority in safely disposing any waste material accumulated in the surrounding.
Maldives is the prime host of the 6th 3R Forum، while the slogan for this year’s forum is “Our environment، our economy”.
