The barge which ran aground just off the coast of B. Thulhaadhoo, blocking traffic coming in and out of the island, has been rescued after five days.
President of Thulhaadhoo Council, Ahmed Rasheed reported the MTCC barge was carrying construction material to build the outer seawall on the island when it ran aground at the channel into the island on October 15.
Ahmed Rasheed said the barge was rescued near midnight, last Wednesday.
The incident posed problems when it brought marine traffic in and out of the island to a standstill. It had also created fear of a food shortage on the island as the sole cargo boat which transports staple products to the island remained stuck in Thulhaadhoo, unable to leave for Male’ City.
Ahmed Rasheed said the cargo boat has now left for Male’ City to transport staple products to the island.
