Ghassan files civil case against police superintendent
After filing the case, Ghassan's lawyer Mohamed 'Wadde' Waheed told journalists that the case was filed over the arrest of Ghassan made by the police in violation of the constitution and Police Act. "The case deals with the arrest of Ghassan by Jinah against the constitution and Police Act. We requested the court to declare that Jinah's actions in arresting Ghassan were illegal and that he should take the responsibility," he said. Ghassan also sought a "just compensation" for his unconstitutional arrest. Police on October 24 arrested Ghassan and took him to Dhoonidhoo in its enquiry into the violence committed during the protest held by the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) outside Gayoom's residence Endherimaage on October 20. Police alleged that Ghassan dropped a wooden block, which injured a 17-year-old boy, from the balcony of the house. However, he was later released as the Criminal Court ruled his arrest was in violation of the procedures devised by the Supreme Court to execute Article 46 of the constitution.
