Court to freeze Thasmeen's bank accounts, impose travel ban

The court's decision comes at the back of Kendhoo MP Thasmeen’s failure to pay back a loan of MVR1.9 million taken from Deputy Parliament Speaker Ahmed Nazim. High Court in April had upheld the two-year-old Civil Court ruling ordering Thasmeen to settle the loan. The Civil Court Judge presiding over the case said the next step would be to freeze the bank account and impose a travel ban on Thasmeen, but would do so after informing the accused of the decision during the next hearing. Nazim had sought the unsettled MVR1.92 million out of the US$200,000 (MVR2.55 million) taken as a loan by Thasmen and another MVR100,000 incurred as legal fees. The case was filed at the Civil Court on December 29, 2010 while the verdict was delivered on April 21, 2011. Thasmeen had appealed the Civil Court verdict at the High Court on June 9, 2011. The DRP leader was picked as the running mate of incumbent President Mohamed Waheed Hassan for the upcoming presidential elections slated for September 7 after the president’s Gaumee Ithihad Party (GIP) formed a coalition with DRP, religious conservative Adhaalath Party and former Attorney General (AG) Dr Hassan Saeed’s Dhivehi Qaumee Party (DQP). However, Thasmeen will fail to meet the qualifications of a VP if he has an undischarged decreed debt as enshrined in the constitution. His parliamentary seat will also be under threat as a person will be disqualified from a member of parliament if he has a decreed debt which is not being paid as provided in the judgment.
