Fisheries and Agriculture Minister Dr. Muhammad Shainee have said that, Nasheed was sentenced to jail not because of something the government did and holding talks to free Nasheed is a responsibility of those who want to see him freed.
Speaking to Miadhu News, Dr.Shainee said that Nasheed was sentenced regarding a case in which he himself confessed in front of the people and also have asked for forgiveness.
“Hence, it is up to those who want to free him to see if there is anything that can be done. It will not be possible to free him without amending the constitution. The government alone cannot amend the constitution. Support from all the parties is needed to amend the constitution” said Dr.shainee.
While MDP wants to achieve everything through UN, it is not possible for UN to amend the constitution of Maldives.
Dr.Shainee also said that the government does not need to hold talks with the opposition now because the people are with the government. He said that since government is conducting developmental projects in all the islands of Maldives the support for government is increasing all over the country.
Dr.Shainee said the opposition wants to free people who are undergoing jail sentences and if they want to do that, it is up to them to plan how that can be achieved and propose it to the government. “ When they make a proposal then the government can check what the government can do” said Dr.Shainee.
Dr.Shainee said that while everything is so clear, it is sad to see that the opposition tries to spread false information to the public.
