President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has assured that all halted water and sewerage projects across the Maldives will resume this month after resolving the issues that caused delays, while also ensuring that the government has full control over their progress. He made the statement while addressing the residents of Angolhitheemu, Raa Atoll, as part of his ongoing visit to select islands of North Maalhosmadulu Atoll.
In his remarks, the President reaffirmed his commitment to prioritising the development of Angolhitheemu, noting that his visit to the island aimed to assure the residents. He highlighted that the administration took extensive measures last year to avert bankruptcy amid economic hardship and increasing national debt. He further noted that the budget for 2024, inherited from the former government, was inadequate to fund development projects. However, he expressed confidence in overcoming these obstacles and fulfilling pledges made to the people.
President Muizzu said the resolution of economic challenges as well as the budget approved for the current year will see several development projects kicked off this year and the resumption of halted projects. This year will see several development projects implemented in Angolhitheemu, he assured.
Noting that several water and sewerage projects had to be halted due to multiple projects being awarded to the same company, the President said resolutions are now being sought, and the projects are expected to be resumed in Angolhitheemu and other islands imminently. The projects will be completed with government oversight, he added.
Further assuring that he will bring about the promised development to Angolhitheemu, including resolving harbour issues and the development of a swimming area and T-jetty on the island, the President expressed his desire to move forward quickly and produce results within a short timeframe. Instead of writing back and forth with relevant authorities, he prefers directly meeting with the stakeholders in the islands to discuss issues and identify solutions, he said.
Noting the priority given to the health and education sector in this year’s budget, President Muizzu pledged to set up additional classrooms, a multipurpose hall, and other facilities at Angolhitheemu School, as well as ensure an uninterrupted supply of consumables at the island’s health centre. The government has also decided to bulk procure high-quality health resources and make them available to the islands, he revealed.
“Even if a large one-time payment is necessary, future expenses will be reduced. The best quality facilities will be installed across the country. This policy will address the issues faced by this island,” he noted.
The President further noted that as soon as Angolhitheemu’s water and sewerage project reaches completion, a road development project will be implemented. He further emphasised the need for sports facilities to ensure the well-being of youth and women and pledged to establish the necessary facilities. All halted sports projects and new projects alike will be implemented this year and the next year, he added.
The President also underscored the government’s commitment to incorporating public input in developing the Maldives’ national master plan. He emphasised that the government values the development views of the people, and said the development decisions would reflect the wishes of the people and be legally empowered. He urged cooperation from the people and expressed his preference for direct engagement with the people to expedite solutions.
