Parliament arrangement based on party composition not approved

The majority members of the parliament have decided against rearranging the parliamentary seats to reflect the political party compositions.
The proposition suggested arranging the members based on the political parties they represent.
Currently, Malé City members sit at the front row, while members representing the atolls from Haa Alifu to Seenu sit in ascending order of the atolls.
The revision to the seating arrangement was submitted to and approved by the General Purpose Committee three years ago.
During Tuesday's sitting, a vote was held on the matter, and all 42 members present voted against the proposition.
The seating arrangement based on political party composition is a common practice in other parts of the world. In the United States Congress, the Democratic members sit on the right side while the Republican members sit on the left.
The proposition to rearrange the seating in the parliament based on party composition was submitted by former President Mohamed Nasheed.
