A man attempting to steal from a STELCO transformer near Maafannu School has been apprehended after security spotted him on CCTV footage.
STELCO said that at around 2:50am last night, staff had seen on CCTV a man attempting to steal from this transformer. The matter had been promptly reported to Police who went to the scene and arrested him while in the act.
STELCO said that the substations in Male' are monitored around the clock. However, public assistance is needed to prevent such theft from substations in Hulhumale' Phase 2, the company said.
STELCO warned to refrain from attempting theft from transformer substations as doing so is highly dangerous and poses a risk to life. They called on relevant authorities to identify and take action against those involved in the sale and purchase of items stolen from transformers, posing great inconvenience to the public.
Theft from transformers are becoming increasingly common despite the threat it poses. Last year, a man attempting such theft had been electrocuted to death.
