Commissioner of Police Abdullah Riyaz has congratulated the two leading candidates in Saturday’s presidential election, presidential candidate of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Mohamed Nasheed and presidential candidate of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) Abdulla Yameen.
Riyaz said this in an interview given via Police Media regarding the security arrangements made by the police during the election.
He noted the cooperation given by the public to the police, during the efforts by the police to maintain peace and order.
“The election ended smoothly and peacefully because the people prioritised the country’s peace. The election that just ended, was a peaceful one without any unrest,” he said.
MDP’s Mohamed Nasheed was the leading candidate in Saturday’s presidential election, with 45 percent votes, while PPM’s Abdullah Yameen came second with 25 percent.
