A teenager from West Yorkshire is believed to have become the UK’s youngest ever suicide bomber، after reportedly blowing himself up in an attack in Iraq on Saturday، The Guardian reports.
17-year-old Talha Asmal was one of four suicide bombers who attacked security targets near an oil refinery near Baiji، to the north of Baghdad.
Pictures of Talha Asmal، 17، were released by Isis on Saturday، along with a statement saying that he detonated a vehicle fitted with explosives in the northern Iraqi town of Baiji.
The militant group said his name was Abu Yusuf al-Britani but following media reports identifying the boy in the pictures as Asmal، his family released a statement on Sunday expressing their grief and anger.
Asmal joined the extremists in April، after he boarded a flight to Turkey with his friend Hassan Munshi، also 17 at the time. The families of both boys issued an urgent appeal for their return، adding they were gravely worried the pair had joined IS.
At least 11 Iraqi security personnel were killed in quadruple suicide car bombing near Baiji. Islamic State said four of its foreign fighters carried out the attack. An IS statement said that the bombers were a Kuwaiti، a Palestinian، a Briton and a German.
Seven soldiers were killed، AFP reported – as well as four members of the Popular Mobilisation force، an umbrella for mostly Shiite militias and volunteers that has been doing much of the heavy lifting in the fight against IS in Iraq.
