Constitutional case filed at Supreme Court regarding election

A constitutional case has been filed at the Supreme Court regarding the presidential election on September 23.
Economic ministry’s deputy minister and attorney Abdulla Siyaz and Judicial Service Commission’s (JSC) Mohamed Saleem filed the case on Wednesday on behalf of President Abdulla Yameen.
Saleem told the press that President Yameen decided to file the case after many of his supporters filed complaints regarding the election to the ruling party’s office and the President’s legal team.
Saleem, who is one of President Yameen’s top attorneys, did not detail the exact issues people had with the election. He also said that it was not a legal issue for him to handle the case while also representing President Yameen at the JSC.
President Yameen and the ruling party officially accepted the election results immediately after opposition candidate Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s win. However, the President later began accusing the Elections Commission of rigging the election and his supporters have since been holding protests outside the ruling party’s office.
