Mohamed Tholal, the Commissioner of Sports, has declared that the confidence expressed by national sports associations in the commission’s services represents its most consequential achievement. He underscored that the commission’s mandate is to facilitate the operations of these bodies, adding that the esteem in which associations hold its services stands as the definitive measure of success.
Tholal cited recent amendments to the Maldives Sports Act as evidence of substantive progress, noting that the changes have expanded opportunities and increased allowances for athletes, coaches, and officials. He highlighted confirmation from the Minister of Sports, Fitness and Recreation that health insurance coverage for athletes will be secured in the forthcoming national budget, a step he characterised as pivotal. He also praised the formal gazetting and structuring of the 'Arutha' scholarship programme, describing it as a major victory for the sector.
Reflecting on his tenure, Tholal pointed to operational reforms introduced upon assuming office, designed to align with the administration’s prioritisation of sports. His strategy was shaped through direct consultations with national sports associations to address their specific needs. He affirmed that sustaining close, collaborative ties with these entities remains a central priority and pledged to maintain this engagement to ensure continued progress.
