President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that a comprehensive air connectivity network will link key islands in the northern atolls once the planned airports under the Integrated Development Zone are completed.
Delivering this year’s Presidential Address to the People’s Majlis last Thursday, the President said the new network will connect HA. Hoarafushi, HA. Dhidhdhoo, HDh. Kulhudhuffushi, HDh. Hanimaadhoo, and HDh. Makunudhoo. The initiative forms part of the government’s broader policy to accelerate development in the northern and southern regions of the Maldives.
Turning to the southern atolls, the President noted that Twin Otter on-wheels flights began on February 1 to Addu City (Gan), Fuvahmulah City, and Huvadhu Atoll, establishing air links across the Integrated Development Zone covering the four southernmost atolls.
He also highlighted ongoing efforts to expand seaplane services, revealing that flights to N. Velidhoo commenced in January, while services to AA. Thoddoo are scheduled to begin within this month.
Airport development nationwide
The President outlined the scale of airport development currently underway across the country:
Airports under development at various stages include HA. Dhidhdhoo, HDh. Makunudhoo, Sh. Bileffahi, Sh. Komandoo, Sh. Milandhoo, N. Vihafaru, R. Alifushi, R. Fainu, B. Thulhaadhoo, AA. Mathiveri, F. Nilandhoo, F. Magoodhoo, Th. Guraidhoo, Th. Vilufushi, L. Kadhdhoo, GA. Villingili, GDh. Kaadedhdhoo, and Addu Gan Airport.
Upgrading works are ongoing at HA. Hoarafushi, HDh. Kulhudhuffushi, Sh. Funadhoo, GA. Maavarulu, and Fuvahmulah City.
The President further stated that all airports in the Maldives are now equipped to handle night landings. He added that B. Dharavandhoo Airport has been transferred to Island Aviation, with development work set to begin shortly, and announced that construction of a second airport in L. Atoll will commence within the year.
Together, these initiatives aim to strengthen national connectivity, improve regional accessibility, and support balanced development across the Maldives.
