Mayor calls for proper waste‑disposal system and fair pricing as dumping complaints rise in Hulhumale'

Male' City Mayor Adam Azim says the persistent problem of garbage dumping across Hulhumale' can only be solved if residents are given access to a proper waste‑management system at an affordable price.
His remarks came after the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) released a video last Tuesday showing piles of garbage dumped in various parts of Hulhumale'. The video urged the public to take responsibility, during Ramadan and throughout the year, implying that the issue stems from public negligence.
Azim, in a post on X, said residents are being unfairly blamed while the city remains under a municipal service company that fails to provide essential basic services. He accused HDC of prioritizing profit over public welfare.

According to the mayor, the waste problem will not be resolved unless a proper system is established and disposal fees are kept “bearable” for the public. He added that HDC must take responsibility for clearing waste and ensuring a clean environment for residents.
His comments come amid growing complaints about large‑scale garbage dumping near the FDC flats. FDC Managing Director Hamdhaan Shakeel has also urged residents to cooperate in keeping the area clean as the issue remains unresolved.
