Public Referendum Regarding The Parliamentary System Is Necessary: Nasheed

Nasheed has argued that a public vote on the parliamentary system is required. He made these remarks as the current president argued that the Maldives does not require a parliamentary system and spoke against it, during the congress which started last night.
MDP’s Chairperson and Economic Minister Fayyaz also stated that the Maldives do not absolutely need a parliamentary system during yesterday night’s congress meeting.
In this conference, Nasheed has maintained that his motion to switch from a presidential to a parliamentary system was not intended for the MDP Members but rather for the whole public.
Nasheed added that if the MDP as a whole cooperates, the party can win the 2023 presidential election. Additionally, he added that if the entire MDP united, it might potentially determine the nation’s direction for future generations.
The public voted in 2007 that the country did not need to transition from a presidential to a parliamentary government system.
