Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed has stated today that work will commence within the first one hundred days of the current administration on building commercial ports in Haa Alif Atoll (Ihavandhippolhu) and Laamu Atoll.
In a post on social media X, the minister said that work on constructing a commercial port near Laamu Atoll Gaadhoo, an integrated commercial port and logistics facility under the Ihavandhippolhu Integrated Development Project Commercial Port, and the Male' Commercial Port will be announced soon and commenced in the near future.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has also pledged to establish a transshipment harbour with bunkering services at Gaadhoo during his first 100 days in office. During his campaign, he further promised construction of a resort between Gaadhoo and Fonadhoo once the harbour project is completed.
In August, STO has signed with Qatar's Urbacon Trading and Contracting (UCC) to establish fuel storage and fuel bunkering services in Ihavandhippolhu, the northern most atoll of the Maldives.
Under this project, a National Strategic Reserve for fuel will be located at the Port City in Ihavandhippolhu. In addition to bunkering services, shipping agencies, crew change and ship handling will also be provided at the port.
