Ministry of Gender and Family stated that they are investigating a case of child abuse in Seenu atoll Meedhoo island.
According to a post that went viral on Facebook, a mother who abuses drugs in front of her child has left the child to starve and has been abusing the child in various ways. The post cited a person living in the same house as the mother and child.
Gender Ministry said that the picture attached to the post is not related to the issue, and that they are investigating the case. It did did not confirm whether the child abuse allegations are true or not.
However, the ministry assured that the child would not be left in an environment dangerous for the child. However, the child appears to be currently living with the mother.
According to another senior official of the Gender Ministry cited in some media, the issue in the Facebook post was made up by some people who have personal issues against the child’s mother.
It is noteworthy that recently action has been taken against Gender Ministry officials and a police officer on charges of neglect after a three year old boy was beaten to death by his mother in 2015.
