Maldives Police Service have remanded secretary general of opposition Jumhoory Party, Ahmed Sameer, under police custody, accusing him of four offences.
Police arrested the former lawmaker of Dhidhdhoo constituency late Wednesday while he was giving an interview to opposition aligned television channel Raajje TV during a rally held near the opposition’s main activity hub of Kunooz in capital Male’s Maafannu ward.
According to Sameer’s lawyer Ali Zahir, Police are accusing him of battery for striking a law enforcement officer, obstruction of the governing body, escape, and causing damage to public interest.
The Criminal Court will announce the verdict on Sameer’s remand at 3:00 p.m. Thursday.
Police had previously interrogated Sameer for allegedly attempting to topple the government.
