The Commonwealth backed CNI’s report which was publicized yesterday had ruled that Nasheed had resigned on his own free will and the transfer of power had been constitutional. Speaking to the media for the first time since the release of the CNI’s report, Nasheed further alleged that the report had been compiled with the situation in mind rather than the truth. He further added that he respected the concerns raised by his representative to the CNI Ahmed ‘Gahaa’ Saeed who had resigned on the eve of the report’s release. Nasheed stressed that his decision to accept CNI’s report is with the concerns of Saeed. Saeed yesterday had alleged that the report had omitted vital evidence and hence cannot be considered as entirely genuine. He further expressed his personal belief that Nasheed had in fact resigned under duress. Nasheed pointed out that as the larger political parties had also accepted and agreed to implement the report, the illegitimate activities of the Police and military must be investigated and action taken against the perpetrators. He expressed hope that the political parties would cooperate with that process. In addition, as the CNI’s report had indicated early elections, his Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) would not cease its press for early presidential polls, Nasheed pledged. In response to questions from reporters, Nasheed stressed that stability in the Maldives can only be achieved by acting on CNI’s report. To that end, he said that the criminal offences highlighted in the report must be probed and anyone found guilty must be brought to justice as soon as possible. He added that discussions among political parties must continue.
