Will forward 'Nasheed pepper sprayed' case to Parliament: Ibu
Ibu further labeled the act as a violation of the laws as former Presidents are assured protection and security by law. “I strongly condemn the act. Police must investigate the incident. Police Integrity Commission must initiate an investigation into the offence. Parliament must also launch a probe. The case will be forwarded to Parliament’s 241 Committee this week,” Ibu claimed. He further stressed that freedom of assembly and speech was a right afforded to every citizen of this country, hence Nasheed must be able to participate in such protests. Ibu also claimed that the act against Nasheed further degraded and defamed the police institution and labeled it as a “disappointment.” “At this critical juncture Police should be mindful of maintaining their authority and integrity. During a time when the confidence in the Police institution had been undermined, an attack on Nasheed would further deteriorate the already fragile situation,” he added. While Police have refuted the allegations of intentionally pepper spraying Nasheed, opposition Raajje TV had shown a video of a special operations police officer pepper spraying the former President.
