GMR must remain till the 25 years are over: Nasheed

Speaking in Haa Dhaal Atoll Makunudhoo on his ongoing campaign tour to the north of Maldives, Nasheed said “this is a night of concern.” Nasheed’s statement came after the government on Tuesday had announced its decision to annul the agreement with the Indian infrastructure giant and issued a seven day notice to handover the airport. While criticizing Adhaalath Party (AP) that had led the anti-GMR campaign, Nasheed alleged that the GMR agreement was annulled based on the false pretext of religion and patriotism. Although the government had announced the decision to annul the GMR agreement, Nasheed repeatedly called on GMR to honor the agreement and continue to run the airport. “You (GMR) should remain there till the 25 years are over. In addition, you should complete the agreement made with our (MDP) government and the Maldivian state. We have conditioned the development of a world class airport,” Nasheed said. He said that the agreement had been designed in such a way that it will provide the State with MVR45 billion in revenue within 25 years. He added that the amount is something which needs to go to the State treasury. Nasheed said that the stoppage on the work of the airport’s new terminal by GMR is of concern to the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) hence he requested to expedite the work of the new terminal. In response to the Attorney General (AG) Aishath Azima Shakoor’s statement that the GMR agreement had been annulled based on foreign legal expertise, Nasheed said that “it is a lie,” He also questioned the nationality and background of the experts.
