Discussions related to the establishment of a Free Trade Agreement between China and Maldives began on Monday at Bandos Island Resort in the Maldives.
The two-day deliberations are attended by Minister of Economic Development Mohamed Saeed, and senior officials of the Maldivian government and the Embassy of China in the Maldives. Saeed said in his speech to inaugurate the meeting, that the Maldivian government was committed to doing everything possible to ensure that the talks are successful and beneficial to both countries.

The documents related to the discussions on this agreement were signed in September 2015. Speaking at the signing ceremony, Saeed said this was the first time in the history of the Maldives that the government was in engaged in Free Trade Agreement discussions with another country.
