The China-Maldives Friendship bridge is not a business venture for China, but a service to the people of Maldives. No expenses are being spared in the development of the bridge.
This is evident because the Chinese company developing the bridge did not charge extra, when they had to sink the piers of the bridge to a greater depth than previously planned. If the company proposed to charge extra, the government should accept it. However, they did not do any price revisions and this shows that they do not care about the price of the project but care more about providing a service.
China Friendship Bridge is a name given by President Yameen and President Xi Jinping. President Xi Jinping said that the bridge will connect the people of Maldives and China. This shows that China really values the friendship with Maldives and is sincere about it.
Speaking to the press yesterday, Housing Minister Dr.Muhammad Muizzu said that the work is going on ahead of the schedule. Out of the 35 piers, concrete work of 22 piers have been completed according to the minister. In addition, he said concrete work of 40 piers out of the 80 piers for the approach bridge has been completed as well. He said that all the piers will be completed by May.
Some people say that developing the bridge will increase the debt of Maldives. However, this is nothing more than a baseless story because the expenses for the bridge can be paid even from the aid given to Maldives by China every year.
