Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) President and Dh.Meedhoo Constituency Member of Parliament Ahmed Siyam Mohamed on Saturday warned that rampant corruption and mismanagement pose a significant danger to the nation's independence and nationalism, particularly due to the lack of decisive action against such practices.
In his address on the occasion of National Day, Siyam urged a deep reflection on current societal issues as the nation celebrates its heritage. He highlighted that "well-planned acts of corruption and mismanagement have become commonplace," expressing concern that state agencies tasked with investigating these issues are failing to provide adequate attention.
He specifically pointed out the alarming lack of action against "theft and corruption committed by those with influence and power," deeming these acts "extremely dangerous to the freedom and nationality of the people." Siyam called for "strong and immediate action to stop such acts."
Beyond addressing current challenges, Siyam also appealed to the youth of the country. He urged them to "roll their sleeves, with new courage and enthusiasm, and to work courageously with sustainable determination to maintain the independence and sovereignty of the country and to establish a sustainable and prosperous economy." He emphasized this as a "national duty" requiring the cooperation of every Maldivian to achieve this "noble goal."
Siyam drew upon history to underscore the importance of national unity and resilience, recalling the "very poor and difficult situation" the Maldives faced after 15 years and six months of Portuguese rule before gaining independence. He stressed the importance for every Maldivian to "reflect on and gain knowledge from the unprecedented efforts in the past by national heroes" who worked to rescue the people from despair and establish 'Al-Dawlatul Mahaldeebiyya,' fostering peace, development, Islamic unity, and a strong economy.
He pondered the hypothetical outcome if "Boduthakurufaanu and his comrades had not done that work that day," suggesting the country's present state would be unimaginable.
Siyam concluded by extending his wishes for a happy National Day to all Maldivians and MDA members.
