President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has instructed the Maldives Police Service (MPS) to stop, question, and take legal action against expatriate workers engaged in suspicious or illicit activities on the streets between midnight and 6:00 am, citing concerns over activities that violate social norms.
In a social media announcement, the President stated that the measure, effective immediately, follows complaints from residents of Galolhu ward about foreigners gathering at night and engaging in behavior deemed contrary to social and cultural norms.
The decision came after Tuesday night’s community meeting, where residents raised apprehensions about nighttime disturbances especially from expatriate workers and referenced practices where authorities in most countries enforce similar scrutiny.
Responding to public concerns, President Muizzu directed law enforcement to investigate and address alleged violations. He emphasised that the government values citizen feedback, viewing such engagement as vital to good governance.
The move signals stricter oversight of foreign nationals in the Maldives, with police now authorised to detain and prosecute those breaching local laws during restricted hours.
