Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla reaffirmed the Maldives’ enduring bilateral ties with Pakistan and issued a pointed denunciation of Israel’s genocidal war in Gaza, during an official visit to Islamabad, Pakistan, this week.
His meeting with Acting President Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani, who is currently exercising full presidential authority in his capacity as Chairman of the Senate, came as President Asif Ali Zardari undertakes an official visit to China.
The engagement underscored the historic and cooperative ties between the two countries. Speaker Abdulla expressed appreciation for Pakistan’s sustained support across key sectors, notably education, health, and trade, and extended particular thanks for its assistance to the Maldivian Parliament. He described the parliamentary building as a “symbol of the strong relationship” between the Maldives and Pakistan.
Attention then turned to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Speaker Abdulla condemned what he termed the “inhumane atrocities” committed by Israeli occupational forces, stating unequivocally that the Maldives “will always stand with Palestine”. He pledged continued advocacy for Palestinian rights in international forums.
In closing, Speaker Abdulla conveyed his gratitude to the Pakistani government for its hospitality, noting that the Maldives and Pakistan are bound by shared cultural and religious ties. He highlighted that this common heritage contributes to peace, development, and unity among Islamic nations.
Accompanying the Speaker on the visit, which commenced on 16 September and concludes on 20 September, are four Members of Parliament: Mohamed Shahid of Hulhudhoo, Husnee Mubarik of Manadhoo, Yoosuf Nasheed of Gan, and Abdulla Shazeem of Hulhumalé Central.
