Kulhudhuffushi water supply to run fully on renewable energy from next month

The Male’ Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) will begin producing enough water to meet demand in Kulhudhuffushi City using renewable energy from next month.
MWSC described the project as a significant effort to provide sustainable water services in inhabited islands across the Maldives.
In a social media post, MWSC’s Managing Director Abdul Matheen Mohamed said practical work on converting the system to renewable energy started last year and is now complete.
According to Matheen, the system is currently undergoing testing. Once the testing phase is completed, the system will operate without diesel to produce enough water to cater to the city’s needs from April onwards.
The project, contracted to Japan’s Kanadevia Corporation, includes a reverse osmosis (RO) plant with a capacity of 500 cubic metres per day, a 500 kW solar PV system, and a 1,450 kWh battery system.
MWSC said 27 percent of the project was funded through grant assistance from Japan’s Global Environment Centre Foundation (GEC). The system will run entirely on renewable energy for water production, and will help reduce reliance on fossil fuels and oil imports, while also supporting climate policies and UN Sustainable Development Goals.
The project aligns with broader government policy to utilise natural resources to tackle climate and global challenges.
