President says young people working in resorts will be provided housing on nearby islands

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu said on Tuesday evening that the government will provide housing for young people working in resorts through housing projects developed on nearby islands.
He said one of the biggest challenges faced by youth in the tourism sector is having to live far from their families. Providing housing close to the resorts where they work would allow them to spend more time with their families, he added.
The President said a designated percentage of flats in upcoming housing projects will be allocated specifically for tourism workers and youth.
“The government gives high priority to providing housing for young people working in the tourism sector. We will carry out housing projects in islands with large populations near resort or tourism zones. This will mainly solve the issue of young people being unable to live close to their families,” President Muizzu said.

He added that the government’s policy also prioritises youth working in fisheries and young people starting new families. Priority will be given to youth in housing projects both in Male' and in the atolls.
The President said housing remains the biggest barrier to youth empowerment, and assured that his administration will address the issue.
The government has already allocated 250 flats for newlyweds and young families, with additional units reserved for resort employees.
It is notable that President Muizzu had previously pledged during his campaign to provide housing for young people even if they are unmarried or do not have children.
