Criminal Court, on Monday, ordered the Police to submit evidence in cases where they claim to have evidence against suspects for obstruction of duty.
The 22-year-old male suspect out of the three suspects arrested in a case involve violence and threats against a police officer was presented before the Criminal Court for extension of his remand on Monday.
According to the remand order, there was altercation between the Police and the suspect when they attempted to apprehend him. It further states the suspect threatened a police officer while being transported in a police vehicle.
The remand order by Judge Safath Habeeb stated that the court faces challenges in choosing a side in cases involving violence against police officers and obstruction of duty when the evidence consists solely of testimonies from police officers and suspects.
The judge noted that in most such cases, the court tends to rely on police testimony but still ordered the police to submit any available evidence, such as CCTV or body-worn camera footage.
The case in question saw the arrests of a 19-year-old and a 30-year-old alongside the 22-year-old suspect. While the 19-year-old suspect was remanded for 15 days, the 30-year-old suspect was remanded for two days.
