Hura council closes down youth campsite
MALE, September 12 (HNS) – Kaaf atoll Hura council has barred access to the youth campsite in the island following Friday’s drowning accident at the site, which left four students and principal of Hiriya School dead. Councillor Mohamed Shaihan said the five-member council unanimously endorsed a resolution yesterday to bar access to the campsite until necessary safety measures, including life jackets and rings are established. “We’ll also submit this resolution to the parliament. We don’t oversee the campsite but we barred access to the site because such a tragic accident occurred at the place,” he said. Shaihan stressed that the council should be notified before planning a trip to the campsite, which is being managed by the Youth Ministry. The council unanimously decided to take over the campsite, he added. Nashath Saeed of Meenaz/Gaaf Alif atoll Dhehvadhoo, Mariyam Naaz of Suvaasaage/Haa Alif atoll Hoarafushi, Aishath Shaaniha of Handhuvary Villa/Raa atoll Rasmaadhoo and Mariyam Shaiha of Maafannu Moisha and Principal Ali Nazim drowned to death while on a Fisheries Science field trip to the campsite.
