Committee could summon Prez Waheed, ex-Prez Nasheed
Speaking about the closed-door meetings held by the Committee reviewing the Commission of National Inquiry (CoNI) report in to the findings made during the transfer of power, Committee Chair Thoddoo constituency MP Ali Waheed said that the events of February 6, 7, 8 would only be complete by including a statement from ex-President Nasheed and President Waheed. “Nonetheless, there is no way these two people (President Waheed and Nasheed) are not connected to this report. One resigned abruptly, while the other is seen accepting the position without much previous media attention. I am sure that they will have something to say. The events of 6, 7, 8 won’t be complete without a statement from them. However the committee members will decide on this. I am here to cast my vote,” Ali Waheed said. He said that it had decided to summon former Defence Minister Tholhath Ibrahim Kaleyfaanu, Defense Minister Mohamed Nazim, former Chief of Defense Force Moosa Ali Jaleel, MNDF Chief Ahmed Shiyam, former Home Minister Hassan Afeef and Commissioner of Police Abdulla Riyaz in the days ahead. “Parliament Speaker had assigned this committee to investigate the CoNI report. We are reviewing it now. We will know the authenticity of it when we review it,” Ali Waheed. The committee summoned former MNDF Male area commander Major General Ibrahim Didi and Colonel Mohamed Ziyad on Saturday night. Ali Waheed said that the meeting with Ibrahim Didi went on for over two hours and that the meeting with Colonel Ziyad had to be cut short. “Colonel Ziyad was reluctant to share information regarding the case of Judge Abdulla Mohamed’s arrest as the case is at court. Colonel Ziyad did not request for protection under any clause of the constitution. Hence Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) members wanted to cut short the meeting. However the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) members wanted it to go on with questions other than those related to Chief Criminal Judge Abdulla Mohamed. By then, the Chair decided to adjourn it in light of the circumstance. It is up to the committee to decide on summoning colonel Ziyad again in future,” Ali Waheed said.
