The recent referendum in Addu City Council is a strong demonstration of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's unwavering commitment to empowering the Maldivian people, the Minister of Cities, Local Government and Public Works, Adam Shareef Umar has said.
Speaking to PSM News on the sidelines of President Dr Muizzu's ongoing visit to Addu City, Minister Adam Shareef emphasised the government's steadfast focus on decentralisation and respecting the will of local communities.
He elaborated that the administration's core policy revolves around empowering citizens and ensuring that governance aligns with their aspirations.
The Minister cited the Addu City referendum, specifically the request from residents of Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo to determine their administrative structure through a vote, as a prime example of this principle in action.
"President Dr Muizzu's decision to facilitate this referendum illustrates our dedication to putting the people's wishes first," he said, adding that the broad public support for the government is a direct result of this people-centric approach.
The referendum, initiated after residents of the two islands requested separation from the larger Addu City Council, saw a clear majority of Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo voters opting for independent councils. This democratic exercise confirms President Dr Muizzu's earlier commitment to address such local aspirations.
The first independent Hulhudhoo and Meedhoo councils are slated to be elected during the next year’s local council elections, marking a significant shift in the administrative landscape of Addu City.
