VIA’s New Terminal Seaplane Counters Begin Operations

Passenger services have commenced yesterday at the seaplane counters of Velana International Airport’s (VIA) new terminal, also known as Terminal 1.
Officially inaugurated on July 26 last year, these seaplane counters are located in the space adjacent to the arrival gate.
Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) stated that this new area will provide a seamless start to domestic travel for tourists visiting the Maldives. The company also noted that the seaplane check-in area is fully air-conditioned, offering a pleasant environment for passengers.
Prior to the opening of the new terminal’s seaplane counters, trials were conducted last December. These trials were carried out in collaboration with the national airline, Maldivian, and Villa’s Flyme. Previously, check-in services for passengers heading to the Noovilu Seaplane Terminal were handled at the airport’s old terminal.
The development of VIA’s new terminal cost $457 million (7 billion MVR), and it is currently utilized by 39 airlines. The most recent airline to begin operations from this terminal was Russia’s national carrier, Aeroflot. With this new transition, arrangements are now in place to transport passengers to the “Noovilu” seaplane terminal immediately after check-in.
