Agriculture Ministry states 60 palm trees have been planted across three islands following Agriculture Minister Dr. Mariyam Mariya’s appeal to mass plant Maldivian palm trees across Maldivian islands.
Speaking during the ceremony held to plant 60 palm trees in Hulhumale’ on the occasion of Maldives’ 60th Independence Day, Minister Mariya appealed to the public and all island councils to plant Maldivian palm trees on the islands.
The Minister’s remarks had come amid heavy criticism towards the government for planting date palms at Velana International Airport.
Agriculture Ministry, on Tuesday, said various islands have commenced planting palm trees in response to the Minister’s appeal. In this regard, the Ministry detailed that 60 palm trees have been planted in three islands: L. Fonadhoo, GDh. Madaveli, K. Kaashidhoo.
The Ministry emphasized the significance of planting palm trees to tackle the coconut shortage in the Maldives. It also highlighted the role of palm tree cultivation in boosting the use of products derived from various parts of the tree, aiming to enhance overall productivity in the country.
