The Maldives Zakat House and the Ministry of Social and Family Development have formalised a 25-year agreement to establish a national Empowerment Hub for persons with disabilities. The Ministry of Islamic Affairs confirmed that the initiative will be housed on the first floor of Amaan Udhares Tower 7 in Hulhumalé and will focus on advancing vocational skills, religious education and financial self-reliance.
The Islamic affairs ministry stated that the agreement followed an official request from the social and family development ministry, which sought the Zakat House's support in establishing the facility. The proposal was reviewed during a Zakat Council meeting held on 19 March, where it received formal approval and progressed quickly toward implementation.
Signatories to the accord included Sheikh Izzaddin Adnan, Director General of Zakat, on behalf of the Maldives Zakat House, and State Minister Ibrahim Ismail Ali, representing the social and family development ministry. The Islamic affairs ministry confirmed that the agreement will be in effect for 25 Hijri years.
Planned as a comprehensive resource for persons with disabilities, the empowerment hub is expected to support a growing segment of the population, particularly young people transitioning from formal education, along with individuals possessing a range of skills. The Islamic affairs ministry noted that the facility will offer Islamic instruction, host religious programming and provide professional development aimed at fostering long-term financial independence.
The empowerment hub is set to be located in Amaan Udhares Tower 7, which is currently under development in Hulhumalé Phase 2 by Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation Limited. Government officials described the project as one with the potential to bring 'immense benefits' to persons with disabilities throughout the Maldives.
