First Lady Sajida Mohamed has stated that government policies supporting children and people with autism are an important step toward societal development.
She made the remarks in a social media message marking World Autism Awareness Day.
In her post, the First Lady stressed the importance of respecting the human dignity and value of persons with autism, emphasising that persons with autism must be recognised as an integral part of society across all sectors.
“On this World Autism Awareness Day, we must re-emphasise the inherent dignity and unconditional worth of autistic lives and recognise them as an integral part of every aspect of our society,” she wrote.
The First Lady also called for greater awareness of autism and neurodiversity, and inclusion of neurodiversity in state policies. This will ensure inclusive and sustainable development for all, she said. She highlighted the need for quality education, healthcare, and opportunities to thrive, so that everyone can live fulfilling lives with equal rights and freedoms. She added that removing these barriers is essential for ensuring equal rights, freedoms, and a better quality of life for all.
