The Ministry of Health has formalised the commencement of the design phase for a multi-storey residential wing at the Home for People with Special Needs in Guraidhoo, Kaafu Atoll, marking the inaugural significant structural enhancement to the facility since its inception in June 1976. This executive directive, prioritised by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, seeks to rectify nearly five decades of infrastructural stagnation at the state-governed institution.
Deputy Minister of Health Aminath Ismail confirmed that the administration has secured the requisite appropriations to modernise the centre, which had remained largely unchanged for half a century. Upon the current administration’s assumption of office, immediate mandates were issued to standardise essential services, including the procurement of medical-grade bedding and a comprehensive overhaul of nutritional programmes.
The stabilisation of clinical care protocols has allowed the ministry to pivot towards the structural evolution of the site. State Minister for Health Ismail Abdulla detailed the technical specifications of the proposed expansion, noting that construction of a four-storey accommodation block will commence upon the ratification of architectural designs. The ground floor is slated to house a centralised dining hall and administrative offices, while the three subsequent levels will be exclusively dedicated to high-standard resident accommodation, substantially increasing capacity.
This capital investment underpins a broader strategic shift in social policy, as the government seeks to formalise a transitionary model that reintegrates residents into the community. By providing vocational opportunities and family orientation, the administration aims to codify a pathway towards financial independence and social dignity.
The efficacy of these protocols is evident in the ministry’s report that 23 individuals were successfully reunited with their families by the conclusion of 2025 without requiring readmission. The ministry anticipates a comparable number of transitions throughout 2026, reflecting the presidential agenda to transcend permanent institutionalisation in favour of active recovery.
