Speaker of Parliament, Mohamed Nasheed, has officially resigned from his position.
The resignation was announced during a meeting convened to address the no-confidence motion against Speaker Nasheed. The announcement of Nasheed's resignation was articulated to the Parliament sitting by Parliamentarian Ibrahim Shareef, who presided over the sitting. President Nasheed subsequently confirmed to the assembly that he had indeed submitted the resignation letter.
In the formal resignation letter, Nasheed expressed his concern that continuing in the role of Speaker of Parliament would exacerbate the damage inflicted upon the parliamentary system by the majority party.
Former President Nasheed was appointed the Speaker of Parliament on May 28, 2019 with 67 votes in favour.
