A resolution has been submitted to Parliament, demanding reforms to policies on overtime allowances for employees in the education and health sectors.
The resolution submitted by the main opposition MDP’s Kandhitheemu MP, Ameen Faisal, underscored that employees in the education and health sectors have to work extremely long hours due to the nature of their work.
He emphasized that although there are established policies for paying overtime allowances to employees in these two sectors, they are not being compensated for the extra hours they have worked.
In this regard, he detailed that teachers and those in charge of running schools spend significant time working beyond regular hours, while health sector employees take on long shifts due to an imbalanced patient-to-caregiver ratio.

He suggested increasing employees in both sectors as a solution for this.
Ameen stressed the need to reform government policies to ensure employees in the education and health sectors are compensated for additional hours they work beyond their regular hours, as demanded by the situation.
He called for a human resource audit to assess how the quality of work and working conditions for workers in these sectors can be improved. He also urged the relevant government bodies to revise overtime policies in a way that thoroughly addresses the issue.
Laborers from various sectors have previously staged protests over nonpayment of overtime allowance.
